In Hindu philosophy, especially in the Vedanta school of Hinduism, Ātman is the first principle, the true self of an individual beyond identification with phenomena, the essence of an individual. When loosely translated, the soul and the self both refer to atma or atman only. However, the Abrahamic soul and the Hindu atman are not the same as one can see from the following explanation.
